What's Been Going On In The Former Players Camp Over The Last Few Months
added: 25th September 2007 - 19:30pm

BWFC-FPA Corporate Golf Day was held once again at Dunscar Golf Club on Friday 13th July 2007 (a date which is unlucky for some). Unfortunately the weather was the winner on the day!

It had rained most of the week, quite heavily at times and Friday did not bring any respite from the rain. 25 teams of four participated, but because of the rain, which as good as a condition that the course was in started to flood the green which made putting a lottery. The teams that set out early managed to play 14 holes and the last teams out only managed 3 holes before play was abandoned.

Everyone then returned to the clubhouse to dry out, take a shower and the into the lounge for drinks. Probably about 70% stayed on to be served for a welcome hot meal and to chat about the day's experiences. Alex Smith and the officials from Dunscar Golf Club quickly agreed that they would fit the event in for another day and we were then entertained by former houghton weaver Norman Prince with his band of comedy before departing home.

Friday August 31st was the new date for the former players golf day and again Alex and Carol excelled themselves by managing to get 22 teams to participate in the event. Again, unfortunately the weather was not kind to us and it rained most of the afternoon. Considering the conditions, Wyn Davies' team won the event with a very good score of 84 points.

The committee will have to discuss Wyn's handicap for next year's golf day. So it was thanks to former Man Utd ex-players Alex Stepney and Clayton Blackmore, all the Bolton ex-players and everybody who played on the day, and once again thanks to Dunscar Golf Club for their incredible hospitality.

Bolton's ex-players played their last cricket match of a rain interrupted season against a Darcy Lever XI made up of under 16's and experienced players on Friday 17th August. Bolton's team was just experienced. In an enjoyable and competitive game, Bolton ran out winners with just 2 overs to go! Darcy Lever made 110 from 20 overs with Bolton making 112 for 8 wickets. Roy Greaves hitting 2 consecutive fours to win the game.

Dave Sutton was once again heavily involved in the game. Opening the bowling was Dave was hit for 21 runs from his first over but recovered to take a wicket in his next over then taking a brilliant one-handed catch when fielding. Roy Greaves, Ian Seddon, Peter Nicholson, George Oghani & Albert Lord also took wickets in Darcy Lever's innings. Opening the batting, Dave Sutton was looking to make some runs in his time at the crease, especially as he was bowled out 1st ball in their last game at Farnworth. Dave did last longer, in fact he was bowled 3rd ball this time!

George Oghani replaced Dave and was out 1st ball with the Bolton ex-players struggling on 9 for 2 after 2 overs, a win looked a long way off, but good batting performances came from Ian Seddon, Peter Nicholson, Syd Farrimond. Albert Lord with Roy Greaves seeing the team home!

So, another undefeated season at cricket and a big thank you for all the players who have turned out to play in these games.

BWFC-FPA's next event is their Sportsman's Dinner at Dobbies on Friday 2nd November, 7.30pm for an 8.00pm start. Details will be available shortly of who the speakers will be.
